Argentina is looking to become the first country to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil did so in 1958 and 1962.
To achieve that goal, La Albiceleste will first have to beat Switzerland in a quarterfinal at the 2026 World Cup.
Argentina is favored, but will Lionel Messi‘s squad be up to the task after close calls against Cape Verde and Egypt? USA TODAY decided to ask AI chatbot Microsoft Copilot to predict the outcome of the World Cup quarterfinal.
The chatbot was fed the following query to generate its analysis for the match:
Here’s a breakdown of Copilot’s prediction for the match between Argentina and Switzerland, along with a brief, human-crafted analysis of the chatbot’s pick:
AI’s take: Copilot opined Argentina is “deserved favorites” in this matchup and praised Messi’s form entering the match. It did say Switzerland was “organized defensively” and said the unit is “difficult to break down” but it believes Argentina’s attacking depth will allow it to win its way into the World Cup semifinals.
Our take: Messi has scored eight goals at the 2026 World Cup, which is tied for the most in the tournament with Kylian Mbappé. His team goes as he goes, and there’s little doubt the 39-year-old is at his top form.
Certainly, though, Argentina’s narrow wins over Cape Verde and Egypt – which Copilot did not mention – are cause for concern. It will be worth watching La Albiceleste’s performance closely as they try to put together a more convincing win, but it’s hard to argue against Copilot’s logic for this match.
Copilot also decided to take a shot at naming the goal scorers for the Argentina vs. Switzerland match, unprompted.
Naturally, it believes Messi will net the opening goal – noting its belief he will “find space near the edge of the box” to create the score. The chatbot also picked Julián Álvarez to land a late goal on the counterattack with Switzerland pushing forward to try to tie the match.
Here’s a look at Copilot’s predictions:

Copilot did not predict a Switzerland score, but it opined forward Breel Embolo would be the most likely Swiss player to score.
