A prescription refill initiative that began discreetly in Utah earlier this year has sparked a significant medical controversy about whether artificial intelligence is prepared to assume duties previously exclusive to physicians.
The program enables Utah residents to avoid visiting a doctor and instead obtain prescription renewals online via an AI chatbot named Doctronic. This represents a seemingly simple move toward increased convenience for both patients and those who prescribe medications.
Yet it also constitutes a groundbreaking milestone that has raised concerns among doctors, legal professionals, and public health specialists. The pilot project has revealed numerous questions regarding AI’s function in healthcare, such as how it ought to be regulated, whether physicians should have the authority to override it, and what safety protocols are required to safeguard patients.
Central to the discussion are state and federal regulations that restrict prescribing to licensed medical practitioners. Advocates contend that these laws, which have supported American medicine for over a century, ought to be modernized to incorporate AI chatbots and other emerging technologies.
Dr. Eric Bressman from the University of Pennsylvania stated that a line has been crossed by granting something non-human a medical license, regardless of whether that term is explicitly used.
Bressman and other specialists indicated they are not against AI prescribing. However, they maintain that it should satisfy rigorous criteria comparable to those for human doctors, who undergo years of examination and instruction before being licensed to practice medicine.
In Utah, Doctronic was able to start operations due to a regulatory sandbox that allows state officials to suspend laws for AI firms offering promising innovations.
The refill program is currently supervised by a five-member panel of AI experts, none of whom are physicians. The panel stated it has put in place numerous protections. During the initial stage of the program, human doctors evaluate all Doctronic refill requests. The company anticipates moving to completely automated renewals shortly.
The leader of the state’s medical licensing board reported that he and his colleagues became aware of the program when its January launch was covered in the media. In a March letter to the state, 11 board members urged that the program be stopped, pointing to the dangers of automatically renewing medications that may cause side effects or drug interactions.
Dr. Alan Smith, a family physician who leads the board but noted he was expressing his personal view, said the board was essentially informed that the program was proceeding and that they had no input into it.
