At the centre of this digital shift is ChatGPT, which has emerged as the country’s most widely used AI chatbot.
According to the latest figures from GlobalStats for Q2 2026, OpenAI’s ChatGPT commands 72.19 per cent of Kenya’s AI chatbot market, making it by far the most popular generative AI assistant in the country.
However, while ChatGPT dominates the market, the remaining 27.81 per cent is shared among four competitors, each attracting users for different reasons.

ChatGPT Kenya’s go-to AI assistant

Despite ChatGPT’s overwhelming lead, rival AI platforms continue to strengthen their presence in Kenya by focusing on specialised features.
Google Gemini, with 10.6 per cent of the market, has benefited from its close integration with Android smartphones and Google’s ecosystem of services, including Gmail, Google Docs and Google Workspace.
For users already relying on Google’s products, Gemini offers a seamless AI experience.
Microsoft Copilot, which accounts for 9.76 per cent, has established itself among businesses and professionals through deep integration with Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The platform has become particularly useful for organisations looking to automate routine tasks and improve workplace efficiency.
Perplexity, holding 4.34 per cent of the market, has differentiated itself by combining conversational AI with real-time web search and cited sources. This approach has made it increasingly popular among researchers, students, and professionals who value transparency and fact-based responses.
Meanwhile, Anthropic’s Claude, with 3.11 per cent, has built a loyal following among developers, researchers and writers thanks to its ability to analyse lengthy documents, provide nuanced responses and handle complex reasoning tasks.
Together, these figures show that while ChatGPT remains the dominant force in Kenya’s AI market, competitors are carving out distinct niches by offering specialised tools for productivity, research, enterprise work and advanced reasoning.
Why ChatGPT continues to lead
Industry observers, including Charles Mwaniki, attribute ChatGPT’s dominance to several factors, including its first-mover advantage, regular feature updates and broad functionality.
OpenAI has continually expanded ChatGPT beyond text generation to include voice conversations, image analysis, coding assistance, document interpretation and advanced reasoning. Its availability across web and mobile platforms, together with free and premium subscription options, has further strengthened its appeal among Kenyan users.
