JAKARTA – Anthropic, the company that makes the chatbot Claude, has skyrocketed to become one of the world’s most expensive AI startups with a valuation approaching $1 trillion, or around Rp17 trillion with an assumption of a rate of around Rp17,800 per US dollar. That value makes Anthropic overtake OpenAI in the midst of a hot competition in the global artificial intelligence industry.
According to a Euronews report, Anthropic raised $65 billion in private funding. The funding pushed the company’s valuation to $965 billion.
Anthropic’s valuation now exceeds the last value of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, which was reported at $730 billion.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives. In five years, the San Francisco-based company has grown into a major challenger to OpenAI in the global AI market.
Anthropic’s annual revenue is said to reach 47 billion US dollars. The money comes from the sale of Claude technology to individuals and organizations that use AI to write code, work, and complete various tasks.
The latest funding round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer Investment Group, Greenoaks Capital, and Sequoia Capital.
“This funding will help us serve the historic demand we are experiencing, stay at the forefront of research, and bring Claude to more workplaces,” said Anthropic Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao.
Anthropic also launched a new model, Claude Opus 4.8. The company claims this model is better for coding and professional work than the previous version.
Euronews reported that Anthropic’s growth forced OpenAI to catch up again, even though ChatGPT was the first big name and triggered an AI commercial explosion.
OpenAI was last said to be heading for a valuation of $852 billion after raising $122 billion in funding in March. Elon Musk’s SpaceX meanwhile rose to $1.25 trillion after joining xAI in February.
However, this surge in valuation also raises questions. Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX are said to still spend more money than their revenue. This condition triggers concerns about the “AI bubble”, which is when the value of technology companies jumps very high, but is not necessarily proportional to the actual business profits.
The AI bubble means that the valuation of AI companies is very high, but not necessarily comparable to profits or long-term business strength.
Anthropic is also facing legal and political pressure. President Donald Trump’s administration had ordered all US agencies to stop using Claude in February. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called Anthropic a supply chain risk after an open dispute with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
The dispute is still ongoing in two federal courts. At the same time, Anthropic is discussing with the White House the capabilities and risks of cybersecurity from its most powerful model, Mythos, which is not widely available to the public.
Outside the US market and politics, Anthropic has also been dragged into the AI ethics debate. The company is said to have played a role in the Vatican before Pope Leo XIV called for strong rules for AI and asked technology developers to work for the common good, not just pursue profits.
In his first encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas”, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the dangers of the concentration of power and data in the hands of a few private parties.
Despite its valuation soaring sharply, approaching $1 trillion, Anthropic along with OpenAI and SpaceX still faces scrutiny over high operating costs and concerns about the emergence of an AI bubble in the technology industry.
