The partnership between Apple and OpenAI is facing increasing strain, with the ChatGPT maker reportedly exploring legal options over concerns that its collaboration with the iPhone giant has not delivered the strategic benefits it anticipated, as per a Reuters report.
According to a person familiar with the matter, OpenAI’s legal team is working with an external law firm to evaluate possible actions related to the agreement signed between the two companies in 2024. The options under consideration reportedly include formally notifying Apple of a potential breach of contract, although a full lawsuit has not yet been filed.
The disagreement marks a significant shift in a relationship that was initially seen as a landmark alliance in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry.
Apple unveiled its “Apple Intelligence” platform last year, integrating AI-powered features across its ecosystem, including Siri, messaging and productivity tools. As part of the rollout, Apple incorporated ChatGPT into its devices, allowing users to access OpenAI’s chatbot through Siri and enabling iPhone users to subscribe to ChatGPT services directly via iOS settings.
OpenAI had expected the partnership to drive a surge in ChatGPT subscriptions and pave the way for broader integration of its technology across Apple’s software ecosystem. However, discussions aimed at expanding or renegotiating the agreement have reportedly stalled, leading to frustration within the AI company.
The dispute does not appear to stem from exclusivity concerns. Reports suggest that Apple was never contractually restricted from working with other AI providers, and OpenAI was aware from the beginning that Apple intended to maintain flexibility in its AI strategy.
Still, Apple’s growing engagement with competing AI companies has added to uncertainty around OpenAI’s future role within the ecosystem. The company is reportedly testing integrations with AI models from Anthropic and Google’s Gemini platform as it works to overhaul Siri and strengthen its in-house AI capabilities.
Google’s Gemini is expected to play a key role in Apple’s next-generation Siri experience, which could be showcased at Apple’s annual developer conference in June. The event is widely anticipated to highlight the company’s broader AI roadmap amid intensifying competition among global tech firms.
While OpenAI has not publicly commented on the reported legal deliberations, the development underscores mounting pressure on AI partnerships as companies seek clearer commercial returns and stronger strategic positioning in an increasingly crowded market.
