Warning over Claude AI chatbot scam costing UK households £150
An AI chatbot scam and ‘gift card’ subcription fraud could cost UK households. After subscribing to the Claude chatbot, mystery payments started to appear on one family’s credit card bill.
The family said they began subscribing for £15 a month to Claude, before his wife spotted $200 payments, or £150, on his credit card bill for gift cards to use the artificial intelligence tool.
“My wife asked me: ‘Hey, did you make these $200 purchases?’ It was $400 in total. And then there was a third one, but that needed a confirmation and did not go through,” he told the Guardian.

He started searching online for other victims, and found that a number of Claude users had had similar experiences and detailed them on Reddit.
One Reddit user showed an email to say “You’ve received a gift!” and that a subscription to Claude has been sent to them. A link is provided to redeem the gift.
One Redditor said: "A few days ago I received about 10x transactions on my bank account all for Anthropic for the Claude Pro subscription (each one being £18).
"I have no clue how this may have happened and the first thing I checked was the google account I use to sign into Claude and there's nothing suspicious and no new locations signing in.
"My Claude account also didn't have any suspicious sign ins and I don't have any active API keys.
"I've seen a few posts regarding the same issue from a few months ago so this isn't the first time it happened.
"Does anyone have any clue regarding this and what else I could do? I've contacted Anthropic support and waiting for their reply but I heard they take forever and their AI support is terrible.
"The screenshots provided are for the unauthorised subscriptions made."
