OpenAI has introduced GPT 5.5 Instant as the new default model for ChatGPT, aiming to improve accuracy, personalization, and everyday usability.
OpenAI has rolled out its latest GPT 5.5 Instant model as the new default for ChatGPT. The update focuses on improving factual accuracy, reducing errors, and making responses more useful in daily conversations. The rollout has started for all users, with additional features coming gradually across platforms.
GPT-5.5 Instant is starting to roll out in ChatGPT.

It’s a big upgrade, giving you smarter, clearer, and more personalized answers in a warmer, more natural tone.

And it’s also more concise, which we heard you wanted. We think you’ll love chatting with it. pic.twitter.com/HSQOhjqxp7
One of the biggest upgrades in this release is the significant drop in hallucinations, a long standing issue in AI chatbots. OpenAI says the new model produces 52.5 percent fewer hallucinated claims compared to GPT 5.3 Instant. It also reduces inaccurate responses by 37.3 percent, especially in sensitive areas like medicine, law, and finance.
The company highlights that these improvements come from internal evaluations and testing on high risk prompts. This makes the chatbot more reliable for users who depend on it for factual information.
GPT 5.5 Instant is designed to deliver more natural and to the point responses. It can better understand context from previous chats, uploaded files, and even Gmail, helping generate answers that feel more personal and relevant.
OpenAI says this makes everyday interactions smoother and more useful. The model is also better at handling tasks like image analysis and deciding when to use web information to answer queries.

A major addition across all ChatGPT models is the memory sources feature. This allows users to see exactly what information the chatbot used while generating a personalized response.
Users can:
Importantly, OpenAI confirmed that memory data remains private. If a chat is shared, others will not see the memory sources behind it.
GPT 5.5 Instant is now available to all ChatGPT users and developers through the API. The older GPT 5.3 Instant will remain available for three months before being retired.
Enhanced personalization features will first reach Plus and Pro users on the web, followed by mobile apps. OpenAI plans to expand access to Free, Go, Business, and Enterprise users in the coming weeks.
The new model also shows clear improvements in performance benchmarks. It scored 81.2 on the AIME 2025 math test, up from 65.4 in the previous version. It also performed better in multimodal reasoning tests like MMMU Pro.
These results suggest that GPT 5.5 Instant is not just more accurate but also more capable in complex problem solving and knowledge tasks.
OpenAI has faced criticism in the past when retiring older models. When GPT 4o was discontinued, many users expressed strong emotional attachment, calling it their “best friend” or “a mirror.” Despite backlash, the company moved forward with updates.
This time, OpenAI is giving users a transition period, likely to avoid similar reactions.
I think this update shows OpenAI is finally tackling one of the biggest trust issues in AI which is hallucinations. Cutting errors by such a large margin is a big deal, especially for serious use cases. What stands out to me is the focus on personalization with transparency. Users are not just getting smarter answers, they are also getting control over how those answers are built. That balance between intelligence and control is what could make ChatGPT more dependable in the long run.
