OpenAI has taken steps to address an unusual pattern in ChatGPT responses after users and developers reported frequent references to fantasy-themed metaphors appearing in unrelated conversations.
The issue, which became more noticeable in newer model versions, involved the chatbot using recurring metaphorical language that included references to fictional creatures even in technical or routine contexts.
According to internal analysis, the behaviour was linked to a personality feature introduced in earlier iterations of the model. The feature aimed to make responses more expressive through a “nerdy” conversational style, but resulted in unintended reinforcement of certain types of language.

Data from model evaluations showed a significant increase in the use of such metaphors across versions. While earlier models exhibited a gradual rise, later versions showed a sharp escalation in frequency, particularly in contexts such as coding assistance where errors were described using stylised language.
The behaviour extended beyond users who had selected the specific personality setting. Over time, reinforcement learning processes contributed to the spread of these patterns across broader usage, as responses containing such language were incorporated into training cycles and further reinforced during fine-tuning.
OpenAI said the persistence of the behaviour was partly due to the training lifecycle of its models. Some versions were already in development before the issue was fully identified, allowing the pattern to carry over into subsequent releases.
To address the issue, the company introduced updated system-level instructions to restrict the use of unrelated metaphorical references unless directly relevant to user queries. It also removed training signals that encouraged such language and filtered datasets to reduce the recurrence of similar patterns.

Additional safeguards were implemented, particularly in coding-related tools, to ensure more consistent and neutral responses.
The development highlights challenges in maintaining consistent behaviour in AI systems as they are designed to be more conversational. It also underscores the role of training data and reinforcement mechanisms in shaping how language models respond across different contexts.
