OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is struggling to manage the fallout of a massive global outage of its flagship AI chatbot, leaving thousands of students, professionals, and developers cut off from the service for a number of hours. Its coding bot Codex, was reportedly also affected at the same time.
User reports of the problem started to ramp up around 10:05 am ET. The monitoring service Downdetector recorded around 8,000 complaints coming from within the UK during the peak and 2,000 from the USA. Of all complaints made to the service at the time, 81% concerned issues with the AI chatbot, while only 12% and 8% concerned mobile app and website/login errors, respectively.
During the failure, a range of error messages were presented to users, including a blank screen, an error saying the server was at capacity, and another relating to server error messages. The problems were later acknowledged on OpenAI’s official status page as ‘degraded performance’ impacting both ChatGPT and Codex. An update from OpenAI to its status page around 8:01 am PT indicated that engineers were looking into the technical fault. No timescale was provided for its restoration.
The exact reason behind the outage at the coding platform remained unconfirmed at the time. Engineers have stated that users should refresh their browsers regularly to see if the issue has been restored.
