The tone that made ChatGPT the most recognisable AI product on the planet, patient, helpful, and genuinely pleasant to use, appears to have shifted into something considerably more abrasive.
The complaints are widespread enough that the phrase “ChatGPT is straight out rude now” began trending, with users comparing current responses to a customer service rep who has clearly had enough of their shift. One recurring theme in the shared screenshots is a kind of condescension in the model’s replies, the sense that it is not just answering but quietly judging the person asking.
The irony here is that OpenAI was dealing with the opposite problem less than two years ago. In mid-2024, users flagged that GPT-4o had become almost absurdly sycophantic, offering effusive praise for mediocre work and agreeing with whatever position the user seemed to hold. Sam Altman publicly acknowledged the issue and said the team would fix it. The current backlash suggests that correction may have overshot its target considerably.
