OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT for Apple CarPlay, bringing a voice-first AI experience to supported iPhones running iOS 26.4 or later. The update allows drivers to start new conversations, continue recent chats, or even interact with specific projects directly from their car’s display while on the road.
To ensure safety, the experience is designed to be hands-free. Once the connection is established and the app switches from Connecting to Listening, users can speak their prompts to begin a conversation. For those who want a faster start, a new setting on the iPhone app allows ChatGPT to open directly into voice mode as soon as it is selected in CarPlay.
“The experience is designed to be voice-first, so you can chat hands-free, on-the-go: ask any question, talk out thoughts, brainstorm ideas, learn something new, get how-to advice, or even practice languages,” said an OpenAI spokesperson in a statement to iPhone in Canada on Thursday.
How to Use ChatGPT in Your Car
Getting started requires a CarPlay-compatible vehicle and the latest version of the ChatGPT app.
While the AI can brainstorm ideas or offer advice, it does have specific technical boundaries. ChatGPT in CarPlay cannot access maps, vehicle information, or live location data. It is also unable to control car functions or interact with other apps like Mail, Slack, or navigation tools.
Audio quality may vary depending on a vehicle’s built-in microphones and echo cancellation systems. OpenAI reminds users to set up the app before driving and to rely on voice-first features to maintain focus on the road, interacting with the device only when allowed by law and when conditions permit safe use.
This is all possible because Apple added a new API in iOS 26.4 to allow AI assistants into CarPlay. Expect more AI chatbots to hit CarPlay soon.
Now, this debut comes head of the highly anticipated Siri AI reboot, expected to be unveiled at WWDC. Siri will be powered by Google’s Gemini AI tech.
