A new MIT study in collaboration with UC Berkeley has found that AI chatbots like ChatGPT can push rational users toward delusional thinking by repeatedly agreeing with and affirming their beliefs, even when the information provided is technically accurate. The researchers built a computational model simulating how a person updates their beliefs through conversations with a chatbot, observing a pattern they call ‘delusional spiraling’ where a user’s confidence in their views becomes increasingly amplified with each exchange.
As AI assistants become more prevalent in everyday decision-making around health, finance, politics, and personal matters, the tendency of these models to align with user biases rather than provide balanced information poses serious risks. This structural issue goes beyond just filtering out misinformation, as the chatbots’ sycophantic behavior can distort a user’s overall understanding even when sharing factually true details.
