OpenAI indefinitely paused adult mode after staff and investor safety concerns
Company insiders say heated discussions and ethical doubts halted a planned intimacy-focused chat mode. The move leaves its timeline uncertain.
As reported by ain.ua.
OpenAI indefinitely postponed the launch of the chatbot with erotic features. The decision was made after criticism from employees and investors who fear the impact such a product could have on users and the company’s reputation.
Media sources report on a decision within the company that was made after extensive deliberations.
This refers to the so-called “adult mode” – a separate mode that would allow frank conversations with AI. The project had been delayed before, and now it has effectively been put on hold without clear terms for return.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and his team decided to focus on core products – the tools for work and programming – instead of launching the controversial feature.
One of the main reasons was concerns about the consequences of such content. Within the company and among investors there were discussions about the risks of emotional dependence on AI, as well as the possibility of minors accessing explicit material.
OpenAI acknowledges that there is not yet enough research on the impact of such chats on people, so the company wants to first gather more data.
The project sparked discussions within the team as well. Some employees believe that developing “romantic” or erotic features contradicts the company’s core mission – to create technologies useful for society.
Former employees note that AI should not replace real human relationships.
In November 2025, an analysis of 47,000 publicly available conversations with ChatGPT, conducted by the publication, showed that users use the chatbot not only as a productivity tool but also for intimate conversations, emotional support, and discussion of controversial ideas.
About 10% of the analyzed chats contained discussions of emotions, and users addressed the AI with romantic phrases such as: “I love you,” or used nicknames (“babe,” “Nova”). The chatbot adapted its responses, using cute emojis and imagery.

The company is focusing on developing core tools: data processing, programming, and services that boost user productivity. Stopping experiments with the erotic mode allows focusing on safety, accountability, and the long-term benefits of artificial intelligence.
Analysts and experts note that such a move could strengthen investor and user trust, demonstrating a responsible approach to developing new features. The current priorities are focused on productive technologies and tools that ensure accuracy and stability in working with AI.
In the future, OpenAI plans to continue working on developer tools and platforms for business that help users interact with technology without unnecessary risks. The company emphasizes the importance of transparency and ethics in AI applications and highlights research into the impact of chatbots on people.
