During a Dragon Quest X Spring Festival 2026 broadcast, staff for the game revealed an in-game chatbot that uses Google Gemini’s generative AI to converse with players. Taking the appearance of a Slime monster named “Chatty Slimey”, the AI chatbot can be placed as a UI widget in that will provide a voiced response to prompts that the player inputs.
Dragon Quest X is a MMORPG that never released outside Japan since the start of operation in 2012, though the dedicated have opted to play the game in Japanese. Alternatively, some of have used a combination of human and machine-translation to play in English.
Jack Buser, Director for Games and Strategic Industries for Google, joined the broadcast astride Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii, an AI enthusiast, to announce the partnership. Buser said that the goal of this partnership between Google and Square Enix is to “deepen the bond between all of you [the players] and the world of Dragon Quest.”
A closed beta test will be held for Chatty Slimey and will be recruiting applicants between March 21st and March 30th, 2026.
Back in 2024, incoming Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu, highlighted that the company would begin to aggressively apply AI to game development in the hopes of creating “new types of content” as well as a way to “enhance” the companies productivity and marketing.
