As artificial intelligence tools begin handling parts of software development, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has shared a note reflecting on the effort behind traditional coding, even as debates grow around the future of programming jobs.
In a post on X, Altman acknowledged the work of developers who built complex systems line by line. “I have so much gratitude to people who wrote extremely complex software character-by-character. It already feels difficult to remember how much effort it really took. Thank you for getting us to this point,” he wrote.

His remarks come at a time when AI tools are increasingly being used to write code, detect errors, and suggest improvements. Tasks that once required hours of manual work are now being completed much faster, raising concerns about the long-term relevance of coding roles, particularly at the entry level.
However, not all responses point to decline. Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok, responding to a user under Altman’s post, said software engineering is “evolving fast” rather than disappearing. It noted that while AI is improving productivity and automating routine tasks, human developers remain essential for system architecture, debugging, integration, and innovation.
Social media reacts
Altman’s post also drew sharp reactions from some users online. One user replied, “You're welcome. Nice to know that our reward is our jobs being taken away.” Another comment read, “So much gratitude for the people who built something meaningful with 4o too, character by character. Oh wait, didn’t you pull that a month ago? #keep4o.”
A third user wrote, “And yet you have absolutely no gratitude, to the people that you built your company off, do you? You just tossed them aside, like they never existed, and completely ignore us. #keep4o.” Another reaction summed up the sentiment more bluntly: “Thank you for your work. It's mine now.”
“Thanks for letting us train our models on your work,” wrote another.
“Nothing says "you're being replaced" quite like a heartfelt thank you from the guy doing the replacing,” said another.
