OpenAI has announced that its new GPT-5.3 Instant model for ChatGPT will reduce what it described as cringe and preachy disclaimers, following user feedback about the chatbot’s tone.
According to the model’s release notes, the GPT-5.3 update focuses on improving user experience, including tone, relevance and conversational flow, areas that may not necessarily be reflected in benchmark scores but can significantly influence how users perceive interactions.
In a post on social media platform X, OpenAI stated that it had heard user feedback clearly and that GPT-5.3 Instant reduces the cringe.
The company shared a comparison between responses generated by GPT-5.2 Instant and GPT-5.3 Instant to the same query. In the earlier version, the chatbot began its response with a reassurance phrase telling the user they were not broken, a formulation that has drawn criticism from some users. In the updated model, the chatbot acknowledges the difficulty of a situation without directly attempting to reassure the user.

The tone adopted by the GPT-5.2 model has reportedly frustrated users, with numerous posts on social media indicating dissatisfaction. The issue was widely discussed on the ChatGPT subreddit before attention shifted to a separate deal involving the Pentagon. Some users stated that they had cancelled subscriptions in response to the tone.
Critics argued that responses framed as though the user were in distress, even when they were simply seeking information, came across as condescending. In several instances, ChatGPT offered reminders to breathe or similar reassurances when the context did not appear to warrant such responses. Users stated that this made them feel infantilised or that the chatbot was making assumptions about their mental state.
As per TechCrunch, tne Reddit user remarked that no one has ever calmed down in the history of being told to calm down, reflecting a broader frustration with the model’s phrasing.
OpenAI’s adjustments come as the company faces multiple lawsuits alleging that the chatbot contributed to negative mental health outcomes, in some cases including suicide. The company’s approach suggests an attempt to balance safeguards with more direct communication.
The update highlights the challenge of striking an appropriate balance between empathy and efficiency, as users increasingly expect quick, factual answers without unnecessary commentary.
