That OpenClaw is not just an open-source project, but has now also become an object of desire between the AI power blocs of the USA and China, is demonstrated by the following development: While OpenAI has managed to win over OpenClaw developer Peter Steinberger, the Chinese startup Moonshot AI has simultaneously begun integrating OpenClaw into its AI chatbot Kimi.
The integration enables users to deploy Kimi as a cloud-based AI assistant with just a few clicks. This is supposed to simplify things considerably. Because fundamentally, users have to take care of the installation of OpenClaw themselves – for example on a Mac Mini or a virtual machine in the cloud. Moonshot AI now wants to remove this complexity.
Since Steinberger now works at OpenAI, one can already imagine what an OpenClaw integration in ChatGPT could look like – possibly quite similar to what Moonshot AI has just demonstrated. Since AI is also of geostrategic interest, it will also be interesting to see how “open” OpenClaw will remain in the direction of Chinese AI.
OpenClaw positions itself as a platform for AI assistants with personality and memory functionality. Through the integration, users can deploy Kimi directly via the platform in the cloud without having to build complex technical infrastructure themselves. The service runs around the clock after activation.
The Kimi version deployed via OpenClaw comes preconfigured with the Kimi K2.5 Thinking model. The system has ready-to-use features and can be used across platforms in various messaging services. According to Moonshot AI, the assistant is capable of handling tasks proactively.
Kimi K2.5 is now among the top models worldwide, and Moonshot AI is, alongside Zhipu AI and MiniMax, one of the leading AI labs from China. Most recently, it has already become apparent that increasingly more open-source models from China are being integrated into OpenClaw, alongside US providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
