OpenAI says it is regaining momentum in the increasingly competitive AI chatbot and coding assistant market, even as rivals like Anthropic and Google step up pressure.
In an internal Slack message, CEO Sam Altman told employees that ChatGPT is “back to exceeding 10% monthly growth,” signalling a rebound after what he previously described internally as a “code red” period. The message, viewed by CNBC, also indicated that an updated chat model is slated for release this week.
ChatGPT now serves more than 800 million weekly users. However, competition has intensified, particularly in developer-focused tools where Anthropic’s Claude Code has gained traction. In December, OpenAI reportedly paused several projects to prioritise performance upgrades and sharpen ChatGPT’s competitive edge.
Altman also flagged rapid growth in OpenAI’s coding assistant, Codex. According to the internal message, Codex usage surged by roughly 50% in a single week. He described the momentum as “insane,” underscoring the company’s push to reclaim developer mindshare.
Last week, OpenAI introduced GPT-5.3-Codex and launched a standalone macOS app aimed at Apple users. The company has reportedly been sharing internal metrics with investors suggesting that Codex is beginning to chip away at Claude Code’s market share.
The week was not without friction. Anthropic’s Super Bowl advertisements mocked OpenAI’s move toward advertising within ChatGPT, prompting Altman to publicly call the ads “deceptive.” He maintained that OpenAI would not implement advertising in the manner depicted.
Nevertheless, OpenAI is proceeding with limited ad trials. The company is expected to begin testing ads within ChatGPT imminently, with placements appearing at the bottom of responses and clearly labelled. OpenAI has said ads will not influence chatbot outputs and are projected to account for less than half of overall revenue over time.
The growth narrative is also central to OpenAI’s ongoing fundraising efforts. Altman and CFO Sarah Friar are pitching the company’s scale, enterprise traction and computing capacity as they seek to close what could become a $100 billion funding round.
That round may unfold in stages and could involve Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon and SoftBank, signalling how capital-intensive the next phase of AI competition has become.
