JAKARTA – Apple is reportedly preparing a major move that could potentially change the way users interact with the CarPlay system in the car. The Cupertino-based technology company plans to open CarPlay to third-party artificial intelligence chatbots that can be controlled by voice, a policy that marks a significant change from Apple’s closed approach so far.
According to a source familiar with the plans, Apple is developing support for voice-based AI chatbot apps to run on CarPlay in the coming months. So far, Siri is the only voice assistant allowed to operate on the CarPlay platform.
With this new policy, major developers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are said to have the opportunity to release versions of their AI applications that support special voice control for CarPlay. Users can then ask questions, ask for advice, or interact directly with an AI chatbot while driving.
However, Apple still maintains certain limitations. Siri will not be able to be replaced completely, including the caller’s word or Apple’s typical wake word such as “Hey Siri”. This means that third-party voice assistants can only be used as a complement, not a replacement for Siri.
To activate third-party AI chatbots, users must first open the related application on CarPlay. After the application is opened, developers can set the voice mode to be active automatically, so that interactions can be carried out without touching the screen, as long as the application is running.
This step is considered Apple’s effort to improve the quality of voice interaction in CarPlay. Until now, users who want to use AI other than Siri often have to use indirect ways, such as using external applications or limited integration through mobile phones.
By opening the door to third-party AI chatbots, Apple is expected to provide a smarter and more flexible driving experience, especially amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence-based assistants. However, Apple’s decision still reflects the company’s typical approach: opening the ecosystem in a limited way, while still maintaining full control over the core features of CarPlay.
If realized in the near future, this policy could be one of the biggest changes to CarPlay in recent years, marking a new chapter in the competition for AI assistants in the car.
