New Delhi | A tragic murder–suicide case in the United States has triggered a major legal and ethical debate over the responsibilities of artificial intelligence platforms, after the family of a deceased man filed a lawsuit alleging that prolonged interactions with OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT worsened his mental delusions.
The case stems from an incident in August 2025, when a 56-year-old man allegedly killed his 83-year-old mother before taking his own life. Court documents cited in international media reports state that the man had been engaging with ChatGPT for several hours daily over a period of nearly five months prior to the incident.
The victim’s family has now approached a US court, naming OpenAI, its chief executive Sam Altman, and Microsoft as defendants.
