A Florida lawmaker is proposing new rules for AI chatbots after concerns they may push children toward self-harm or expose them to explicit content.
Under HB 659 – Interactions with Artificial Intelligence, introduced by Rep. Christine Hunschofsky (D-Broward), operators will have an evidence-based protocol to detect conversations containing subjects of suicidal ideation, directing them to a Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
For minors, the bill will also include reminders that the chatbot is not a real person and protections against sexually explicit content.

The new bill will also require operators to submit reports of how often their chatbots direct users to crisis services.
Commenting on the need for the bill, Rep. Hunschofsky said:
She continued, saying that the bill makes sure there are real warnings, strong safeguards, and real accountability for companies that put chatbots on the market.
The new bill comes days after Gov. Ron DeSantis pushed for a "Bill of Rights" aimed at protecting Floridians in the age of AI, according to previous reports.
DeSantis has been pushing back against AI in more ways than one, vowing to protect taxpayers from hyperscale data center development, including Project Tango, which is set to span 202 acres between Southern Blvd. and 20-mile bend.
