Nearly two-thirds of U.S. teens now use artificial intelligence chatbots, while heavy use of TikTok and YouTube remains a daily — and often constant — part of teen life, according to a new nationwide study released this month by the Pew Research Center.
The survey of 1,458 teens ages 13 to 17, conducted from late September through early October 2025, found that 64% of teens report using AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Character.ai. About 28% say they use chatbots daily, including 16% who use them several times a day or almost constantly.
At the same time, social media use remains deeply embedded in teen routines. About 92% of teens use YouTube, 68% use TikTok, 63% use Instagram and 55% use Snapchat. Roughly one in five teens say they use TikTok and YouTube almost constantly, while 36% report being on at least one major platform nearly nonstop.
The report highlights clear demographic differences in both social media and AI use. Black and Hispanic teens are significantly more likely than White teens to say they are on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram almost constantly. About 35% of Black teens and 23% of Hispanic teens report being on YouTube almost constantly, compared with just 8% of White teens. Older teens, ages 15 to 17, are also far more likely than younger teens to report near-constant online use.
Internet use overall is now nearly universal among teens. The study found that 97% of teens use the internet daily, and 40% say they are online almost constantly — up sharply from 24% a decade ago. Black teens (55%) and Hispanic teens (52%) are about twice as likely as White teens (27%) to report being online almost constantly.
ChatGPT dominates the AI landscape among teens. The survey shows 59% of all teens use ChatGPT, making it by far the most widely used chatbot. Far fewer teens report using Gemini (23%), Meta AI (20%), Copilot (14%), Character.ai (9%) or Claude (3%). ChatGPT use is especially common among teens in higher-income households, while Character.ai is more closely associated with lower- and middle-income households.
Daily chatbot use also varies by race and age. About a third of Black (35%) and Hispanic teens (33%) say they use AI chatbots every day, compared with 22% of White teens. Daily use is also higher among older teens.
The findings show a digital environment where teens are spending large portions of their days online across social platforms while rapidly adopting AI tools for school, entertainment and communication. Pew researchers note that today’s online landscape reflects both long-standing habits and emerging technology trends reshaping how teenagers interact with the digital world.
