JAKARTA OpenAI is testing a new feature that can chat groups with ChatGPT. This feature is a big change that will bring single interactions into groups.
The concept of this group chat is very different from the use of chatbots in general. Competitors like Microsoft Copilot recently also began to introduce similar concepts. This feature is designed to mimic the dynamics of everyday group communication.
This group chat feature runs using OpenAI’s newest AI model, namely GPT-5.1, which was recently introduced. The usage limit will only apply when ChatGPT actively responds. This allows free discussions between group members without triggering usage limits after each message.
The ChatGPT application in this group chat will be equipped with the ability to follow the conversation flow intelligently. Based on the context of the discussion, this chatbot will decide when is the right time to respond and when to remain silent.
To create more personal and interesting interactions, ChatGPT is also given the ability to respond to messages with emojis. In addition, this AI can refer to group member profile photos. For example, ChatGPT can use member profile photos when asked to create personalization images.
Currently, the ChatGPT group chat feature is being tested in selected markets in Asia Pacific. The countries included in this trial phase are Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
OpenAI stated that they will adjust the way this group chat works based on the initial input from users in the test area. Access to more regions around the world will be opened gradually after this feature is optimized.
