OpenAI has introduced a new group chat feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to collaborate directly within shared conversations. The pilot is currently being tested in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, and is available to Free, Plus, and Team users across both mobile and web platforms.
The feature supports groups of up to 20 participants, enabling multi-user discussions with GPT-5.1 Auto providing AI-assisted responses that include search, image generation, file uploads, and dictation. Privacy safeguards ensure that personal chat histories and memory remain private, while group access is invitation-only with content filters for users under 18.
OpenAI described the rollout as an initial step toward creating a more collaborative ChatGPT experience, inviting early user feedback to refine future versions. The launch follows the company’s broader evolution toward AI-powered social interaction tools, including the recent debut of its Sora 2 video-sharing platform.
