OpenAI is piloting group chats in ChatGPT, giving users a new way to collaborate in real-time with friends, family, or coworkers. Following last month’s announcement of more personality and adult content options for ChatGPT, this new feature expands the AI chatbot’s capabilities to shared experiences.
“Whether you’re organizing a group dinner or drafting an outline with coworkers, ChatGPT can help,” OpenAI said in its announcement. “Group chats are separate from your private conversations, and your personal ChatGPT memory is never shared with anyone in the chat.”
Group chats are rolling out now on mobile and web for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. There’s no word yet on when the experimental feature could expand to Canada, the U.S., or other markets.
Users can add one to twenty participants to a chat by tapping the people icon in the top right corner or sharing a link, and ChatGPT will participate contextually, reacting only when needed or when mentioned directly. Responses are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, which intelligently selects the best model based on the user’s plan.

The possibilities for collaboration are vast. Planning a weekend trip, organizing a group dinner, or even brainstorming ideas for work or school projects can now include ChatGPT as a virtual collaborator. Users can share articles, notes, and questions while ChatGPT summarizes and organizes information to keep everyone on the same page.
Privacy remains a core focus for the new feature, with ChatGPT compartmentalizing group chats from your personal chats. Group chats also live in a new, clearly labelled section of the sidebar for easy access. Under-18 users automatically see reduced exposure to sensitive content, and parental controls allow guardians to turn off group chats entirely.
This pilot comes shortly after OpenAI signed a massive $38 billion USD ($53.4 billion CAD) deal with Amazon to host ChatGPT and other AI products on the latter’s cloud servers. It also follows the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered internet browser, and the viral Sora image generation app, now available to Canadian Android users. With OpenAI pushing into collaborative AI experiences with group chats, could a ChatGPT-powered messaging app be next?
All of this is unfolding as Apple prepares to integrate ChatGPT into its devices to power new AI features, a partnership currently facing a lawsuit from Elon Musk’s xAI.
