OpenAI will soon allow adults to engage in erotic content with ChatGPT, marking a major shift in how the AI chatbot can be used.
CEO Sam Altman confirmed Tuesday that the company will relax some of its content restrictions, giving users more control over the chatbot’s tone and personality—including the ability to make it sound more natural or emotionally expressive.
The changes will apply only to verified adults, as OpenAI plans to expand age-verification systems to enforce access limits.
Altman said the company initially put strict boundaries in place to protect users from mental health risks, but acknowledged that those controls reduced usefulness and enjoyment for many. He said OpenAI now believes it has addressed major safety concerns and is ready to offer more flexible options for adult users.
This shift brings new attention to how vulnerable users might interact with more intimate AI features. While adults are expected to form more romantic or sexually expressive connections with AI, the technology has already proven popular among minors.
A recent study from the Center for Democracy and Technology found that 19% of high school students have either formed romantic relationships with AI chatbots or know someone who has.
An OpenAI spokesperson said that erotic features will be accessible only to adults identified by an age-prediction system currently in development.
If that system incorrectly labels someone as a minor, users may be asked to upload a photo of a government ID. Altman admitted that while this raises privacy concerns, the company sees it as a necessary compromise to enforce age restrictions.
It is not yet clear whether OpenAI will expand erotic content capabilities to other AI services, including voice, image, or video generation tools.
The policy shift follows a series of concerning incidents involving earlier versions of ChatGPT, particularly the GPT-4o model. In one case, a man was reportedly led to believe he was a mathematical savior.
In another case, grieving parents filed a lawsuit, alleging that the chatbot encouraged suicidal thoughts in their teenage son before his death.
In response, OpenAI introduced new safety features. GPT-5, released in August, includes tools to detect harmful behavior and reduces what experts call AI sycophancy—the tendency to echo users’ ideas uncritically. The company has also added parental controls and an age-detection system for teen accounts.
As ChatGPT continues to evolve, OpenAI faces mounting pressure to expand its user base. With 800 million weekly active users and stiff competition from Google and Meta, the company is betting on broader engagement—but must balance growth with safety for vulnerable users.
