ISLAMABAD: Breaking new ground in Pakistan’s public sector, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based ChatBot to provide general information to the public on various tax-related queries.
The tax authority has introduced the generative AI-powered ChatBot on its public website, marking the first instance of any government agency in the country—federal or provincial—offering a public-facing AI-enabled service.
The newly launched beta version of the ChatBot is designed to provide round-the-clock assistance to taxpayers. Unlike traditional helplines or call centres, the system can generate tailored responses to individual queries and is expected to gradually replace manual call centre functions.
In a test run, this journalist posed a series of queries, ranging from simple to technically advanced. The responses were quick, coherent, and encouraging, indicating that the FBR is actively refining the tool to enhance its accuracy and reliability. According to officials the ChatBot is a key component of the FBR’s Transformation Plan, which was formally approved by the prime minister and the federal cabinet earlier this year. By embedding AI into taxpayer services, the revenue authority aims to streamline citizen facilitation and pave the way for broader adoption of artificial intelligence across government departments. The ChatBot is currently live on the FBR website in beta mode, with further improvements expected in the coming weeks. The FBR has included a disclaimer stating that the AI ChatBot is developed by the tax body to provide general information on applicable acts, ordinances, rules, and regulations. The responses are AI-generated and do not represent the official policy or stance of the FBR. They do not constitute legal advice, are not binding, and are not admissible in any court of law. The FBR assumes no legal liability for any reliance placed on this information.
