SAN JOSE: Tech billionaire Elon Musk is taking Apple and the ChatGPT creator OpenAI to court, claiming that his own artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok is being disadvantaged.
Musk's AI company xAI asserts in the lawsuit filed in the US state of Texas on Monday that the iPhone company is hindering other chatbots to give ChatGPT an advantage. Apple already responded after Musk's initial threat of a lawsuit two weeks ago, stating that the company's App Store is designed to be fair and not favour anyone.
Last year, Apple started a collaboration with OpenAI, allowing users of iPhones and other devices to make direct inquiries with ChatGPT. According to the company, other AI chatbots could also be integrated in this way over time.
In the lawsuit, xAI complains that Grok is missing out on valuable interactions with users due to the direct link to ChatGPT. This, they claim, makes it more difficult to improve the software with AI, while OpenAI has an advantage.
From xAI's perspective, Apple is a monopolist in the smartphone market in the United States with a 65% share, and OpenAI holds a monopoly in AI chatbots with 80%. This forms the basis for accusing them of anti-competitive behaviour. The aim of the lawsuit is, in addition to damages, a ban on the current cooperation.
