OpenAI has made its boldest push into India with ChatGPT Go, a ₹399 per month plan that offers higher limits on messages, images, uploads and memory—priced like a Jio 5G pack or a Netflix mobile plan. By doing so, it risks sounding a death knell for Indian AI startups long trying to build “India’s ChatGPT” without matching OpenAI’s reach. “Is India ready to pay subscription fees for such products? Honestly, not yet,” said Ankush Sabharwal, CEO of CoRover, who believes prices could fall further, even “down to zero.” India is OpenAI’s second-largest market and its testbed. Altman revealed that the user base here tripled in a year, though most remain on the free tier. The ₹399 plan is designed to convert millions of those users into paying subscribers. Yet, the move complicates life for startups like Krutrim, Fractal, Sarvam and gnani.ai, which are still targeting enterprise-first adoption. As Ganesh Gopalan, founder of gnani.ai, noted: “An ₹399 chatbot like ChatGPT Go is more of a boon than a threat… it significantly broadens the market by making AI accessible to millions of price-sensitive users.” But the competition is fierce. Perplexity is bundled free with airtel, Meta AI is embedded into WhatsApp, and Google gives away AI Pro to students. Against this backdrop, Pawan Prabhat, co-founder of Shorthills AI, asked the critical question: “Casual users already have Perplexity free with Airtel and Meta AI in WhatsApp. Professionals will prefer the full ₹2,000 suite. That raises the question: who is ChatGPT Go really for?” For Indian AI startups, the challenge is stark. Many have leaned on Indic use cases, limiting scale, while others chase enterprise customers abroad. Altman, however, has been clear about his global ambitions: he wants the world to run on a “US stack.” India, he believes, is the ultimate test bed—and unless local startups build their own India stack, they risk being overshadowed in their home market.
