xAI is beefing up Grok’s feature set as it works to close the gap with leading AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. The Elon Musk-backed company announced a new memory system and a workspace feature that gives Grok a much-needed boost in personalization and organization.
The memory feature allows Grok to retain information from previous conversations, enabling it to provide more tailored responses over time. Ask it for restaurant recommendations or travel tips after a few chats, and Grok will draw on what it’s learned about your tastes—if you’ve let it. Memory is optional and transparent: users can see exactly what the bot has remembered, delete individual memories from the chat interface, or turn off the feature entirely in the Data Controls menu.

The memory beta is rolling out on Grok.com and the Grok mobile apps for iOS and Android, with support for Grok inside X still in the works. For now, it’s not available in the EU or U.K., likely due to privacy compliance constraints.
Alongside memory, xAI introduced Workspaces—a new way to group related chats, files, and custom instructions under a single topic. Think vacation planning, research projects, or recurring work tasks. Users can switch between these focused environments without having to re-upload documents or re-explain their goals. It’s a straightforward solution to a common annoyance in AI chat interfaces: starting from scratch every time.

With these updates, Grok is starting to look more like a serious contender in the AI chatbot race. But with OpenAI and Google continuing to push the frontier, xAI still has some catching up to do.
