WhatsApp for Android is reportedly testing a new AI feature that enables users to create custom AI chatbots. Currently being rolled out to select beta testers, this feature is expected to reach more users in the coming weeks. Similar to its availability on Instagram and Messenger, it allows users to define the chatbot’s purpose, personality, and appearance, and then engage in one-on-one conversations with their personalized AI bot.

As per a report by WABetaInfo, Meta is introducing its AI Studio-powered chatbot creation feature to WhatsApp, spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.18.4. This “Create an AI” feature has been released to a select group of beta testers via the Play Store. It marks the arrival of customizable AI chatbots on WhatsApp, similar to the ones already available on Instagram and Messenger.

The chatbot creation process takes place within a new AI Studio tab, which also includes a selection of pre-made chatbots users can interact with. To build a custom AI bot, users first write a detailed prompt—up to 1,000 characters—describing the chatbot’s role and purpose. Based on this input, WhatsApp suggests personality traits and roles like helper, mentor, or teacher, which users can accept or modify.

Users also choose an avatar for their chatbot, with WhatsApp providing suggestions based on the description. However, users can customize or create a new avatar using text prompts. After completing these steps, the AI Studio generates a custom chatbot that users can start chatting with immediately.
It’s not yet clear if WhatsApp will allow sharing of these custom chatbots with the wider community, though this feature is available on Instagram and Messenger. More beta testers are expected to gain access to this feature in the coming weeks, but there’s no confirmed timeline for a full public rollout.
