Amazon has new competition with the debut of a web-based AI-driven marketplace by Shopify called Shop AI. The new marketplace allows shoppers to search all products hosted on Shopify’s ecommerce platform.
More than three years after Shopify launched its Shop app, a native app that consolidated Shopify orders and provided limited shopping features, it debuted an AI-driven web-based marketplace that competes directly against Amazon at shop.app.
The new marketplace incorporates all products sold by stores using Shopify’s ecommerce platform. The user interface (UI) starkly contrasts Amazon’s cluttered and busy UI. Its minimalist and clean design helps shoppers quickly find and purchase products.
The feature that makes it unique is its AI shopping assistant, which looks and functions similarly to its Sidekick chatbot for merchants. After conducting an initial search, the Shop AI assistant appears as a sidebar and can be used to refine the search. And if a shopper doesn’t want to use or see the AI chatbot, it can be easily hidden.
Like the native app, the web-based version of Shop supports displaying individual stores. For example, Coywolf’s online storefront can be viewed and searched independently of the new marketplace.
In an email message sent to customers, Shopify stated they made Shop available on shop.app to reduce friction in commerce.
Shop already helps millions of buyers connect with Shopify merchants each month; we want to drive more incremental value for merchants by opening Shop up to a bigger pool of buyers. By launching Shop on the web, we can enable more buyers to discover and purchase from Shop merchants without having to download an app.
Shopify initially branded the marketplace as Shop AI, and visitors had to click the option in the navigation to search for products. However, after this article was originally published, they moved the search to the homepage and removed the Shop AI branding and navigation. The web-based marketplace search is now the primary element above the fold on the Shop homepage.
If you’re interested in hosting an online store with Shopify and having your products appear in its new web-based marketplace, their plans start at $5/mo, and you can try it out first with a free trial.
